The ear aesthetic is different from the aesthetic of our other organs in some ways. Unlike other organs, our ears are visible from the front, side and back.
If the distance between the pinna and the head is larger than normal, it is often referred to as the “Prominent Ear” or “Prominent Ear” deformity. The conditions that often accompany the prominent ear problem are that the auricle is larger than normal, the ear folds are not formed sufficiently, and the ear cartilage called the concha is developed more than normal.
The individuals having the obvious ear problems try to hide this situation by growing their hair. However, this cannot always offer a solution, especially for the male gender where the hair cannot be extended.
Another important feature of the prominent ear deformity is that it is almost the only aesthetic intervention seen in childhood and needed. The school-age children are included in a different social environment for their school life. Unfortunately, depending on these extraordinary characteristics, they can be subject to verbal interference. Therefore, it is recommended that children with significant ear deformities be treated before school age.

Ear aesthetics (otoplasty) is unique because the ears are visible from the front, side, and back, making structural deformities difficult to conceal. The most common concern is "Prominent Ear" deformity, which occurs when the distance between the pinna and the head is larger than normal. This condition is typically caused by insufficient ear folds, an overdeveloped auricle, or excessive growth of the ear cartilage known as the concha. While adults may use hair to hide these features, otoplasty is often the only aesthetic intervention recommended during childhood. It is advised that children with significant deformities undergo the procedure before school age to prevent potential social difficulties or verbal interference from peers. The ultimate goal is to improve facial harmony and alleviate the psychological burden of ear asymmetries or protrusions.
The procedure typically takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete for both ears. For patients over 12 years of age, the surgery is often performed under local anaesthesia, while general anaesthesia or a combination of local anaesthesia and sedation is preferred for younger children. The surgeon makes a precision incision behind the ear, ensuring that the entire operation is conducted through a single hidden access point. During the surgery, the cartilage is reduced or reshaped to create missing folds and provide a natural appearance. The ear is then repositioned closer to the scalp at an ideal angle using permanent surgical threads and cartilage-shaping methods. This approach ensures a lasting solution while leaving only a slight, well-concealed scar.
Following the procedure, a specialized cotton dressing is applied to support the new ear shape and folds. This dressing remains in place for 2 to 3 days, after which it is removed during a follow-up examination. Once the primary dressing is off, patients are typically permitted to bathe, and there is generally no requirement for traditional stitch removal. Depending on the severity of the initial deformity, the use of a bandana over the ears may be recommended for several weeks following the removal of the dressing. The recovery process is designed to be efficient, allowing patients to resume their daily routines with their new, permanent ear contours.
