Ear Aesthetic

A surgical procedure designed to correct prominent ears by reshaping the cartilage and bringing the ears closer to the head. Often done before school age to reduce social stress, it is equally effective for adults. Incisions are hidden behind the ears for natural, permanent results.

Right for You?
  • You or your child has "prominent ears" that stick out far from the head.
  • You are self-conscious and try to hide your ears with your hair.
  • Your child is approaching school age (ideal time for surgery).
  • You are an adult (over 12) looking for a permanent correction under local anesthesia.
  • You want a procedure with no visible scarring on the front of the ear.
Common Myths
  • "It affects hearing." → False. The surgery is performed on the outer ear cartilage and has absolutely no effect on the inner ear or hearing.
  • "It is only for children." → False. While recommended early for social reasons, adults can undergo this surgery at any age with the same success.
  • "The ears will stick out again." → False. With modern techniques using permanent sutures and cartilage scoring, recurrence is very rare.

What is Ear Aesthetic?

The ear aesthetic is different from the aesthetic of our other organs in some ways. Unlike other organs, our ears are visible from the front, side and back.

If the distance between the pinna and the head is larger than normal, it is often referred to as the “Prominent Ear” or “Prominent Ear” deformity. The conditions that often accompany the prominent ear problem are that the auricle is larger than normal, the ear folds are not formed sufficiently, and the ear cartilage called the concha is developed more than normal.

The individuals having the obvious ear problems try to hide this situation by growing their hair. However, this cannot always offer a solution, especially for the male gender where the hair cannot be extended.

Another important feature of the prominent ear deformity is that it is almost the only aesthetic intervention seen in childhood and needed. The school-age children are included in a different social environment for their school life. Unfortunately, depending on these extraordinary characteristics, they can be subject to verbal interference. Therefore, it is recommended that children with significant ear deformities be treated before school age.

Clinical Objectives and Social Impact

Ear aesthetics (otoplasty) is unique because the ears are visible from the front, side, and back, making structural deformities difficult to conceal. The most common concern is "Prominent Ear" deformity, which occurs when the distance between the pinna and the head is larger than normal. This condition is typically caused by insufficient ear folds, an overdeveloped auricle, or excessive growth of the ear cartilage known as the concha. While adults may use hair to hide these features, otoplasty is often the only aesthetic intervention recommended during childhood. It is advised that children with significant deformities undergo the procedure before school age to prevent potential social difficulties or verbal interference from peers. The ultimate goal is to improve facial harmony and alleviate the psychological burden of ear asymmetries or protrusions.

Surgical Techniques and Application

The procedure typically takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete for both ears. For patients over 12 years of age, the surgery is often performed under local anaesthesia, while general anaesthesia or a combination of local anaesthesia and sedation is preferred for younger children. The surgeon makes a precision incision behind the ear, ensuring that the entire operation is conducted through a single hidden access point. During the surgery, the cartilage is reduced or reshaped to create missing folds and provide a natural appearance. The ear is then repositioned closer to the scalp at an ideal angle using permanent surgical threads and cartilage-shaping methods. This approach ensures a lasting solution while leaving only a slight, well-concealed scar.

Recovery and Postoperative Milestones

Following the procedure, a specialized cotton dressing is applied to support the new ear shape and folds. This dressing remains in place for 2 to 3 days, after which it is removed during a follow-up examination. Once the primary dressing is off, patients are typically permitted to bathe, and there is generally no requirement for traditional stitch removal. Depending on the severity of the initial deformity, the use of a bandana over the ears may be recommended for several weeks following the removal of the dressing. The recovery process is designed to be efficient, allowing patients to resume their daily routines with their new, permanent ear contours.

We recommend performing otoplasty before a child begins school to prevent potential verbal interference from peers. The procedure can be safely done once the ear has reached a stable size, typically starting around age five or six.
During the surgery, we use surgical methods to shape the underlying cartilage and create missing folds. We reduce the angle between the ear and the scalp, ensuring the solution is permanent and does not rely solely on surgical threads.
All incisions are made behind the ear, where the resulting thin scars are completely hidden from view. Once the healing period is finished, the scars become inconspicuous and do not bother the patient in daily social interactions.
A specialised cotton dressing is applied for two to three days to support the new ear shape and folds. After this is removed, we often recommend wearing a headband over the ears for a few weeks to protect the new position during sleep.
