Scars in Plastic Surgery: Why They Occur, How to Prevent Them and Treatment Methods

What is a Scar?

Scars are tissue changes that occur due to wound healing and leave permanent marks on the skin structure. Every surgical procedure, including plastic surgery, requires a controlled incision in the skin, and scarring can occur after the healing process. The appearance of scars can vary depending on the person’s skin structure and genetic factors, the size of the wound, and the healing process.

The aim of plastic surgery is to achieve the best results both functionally and aesthetically. However, even in well-planned surgeries performed with the right techniques, minimal scarring may occur.

Why Do Scars Occur in Plastic Surgeries?

The formation of scars depends on many factors:

  • Surgical Technique: If the surgeon makes the incisions correctly and with minimal tissue trauma, scar formation can be reduced.
  • Genetic Factors: Some people are more prone to scarring due to their skin structure. Keloid and hypertrophic scar formation can be genetically determined.
  • Skin Type: Scars may be more visible in people with darker skin tones.
  • Size and Depth of Wound: Deep and large incisions may leave more noticeable scars than superficial ones.
  • Healing Process and Care: Poor wound care can increase the risk of infection and cause the scar to become more noticeable.

What Can Be Done To Reduce Scarring From Plastic Surgery?

Although it is not possible to completely prevent scarring, the following methods can be applied to keep scars to a minimum:

  • Surgeon Selection: A doctor who is experienced and specialized in aesthetic surgery should be preferred. Well-planned surgical techniques reduce scar formation.
  • Suture Techniques: Using subcutaneous sutures and removing them at the correct time minimizes scar formation.
  • Wound Care: It is important to pay attention to post-operative wound cleaning and to regularly use the creams and medications recommended by the doctor.
  • Sun Protection: Scars are more sensitive to the sun. UV (Ultraviolet rays) from the sun can cause bad scarring. High factor sunscreens should be used in the post-operative period.
  • Use of Scar Creams and Gels: Silicone-based creams help soften the scar tissue and make it less noticeable.
  • Pressure Therapies: Pressure bandages may be used, especially in patients prone to keloids.

What are the Scar Treatment Methods?

There are various treatment methods to reduce or eliminate existing scars:

1. Silicone Gels and Creams

It is one of the most commonly used methods in scar treatment. Silicone-based products soften the scar tissue and reduce the visibility of the scars.

2. Laser Treatment

Methods such as fractional CO2 laser (Carbon dioxide Laser) and erbium laser help regenerate scar tissue. Collagen production under the skin is supported and the appearance of scars is reduced.

3. Microneedling

By intervening with small micro needles on the skin surface, skin renewal is encouraged. By supporting collagen production, scars are reduced over time.

4. Corticosteroid Injections

It is especially used in the treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scars. It softens the scar tissue, making it flatter and less visible.

5. Surgical Revision

Surgical intervention may be required for some deep and wide scars. The scar tissue is removed and stitched back together to leave a less visible scar.

Things to Pay Attention to in Scar Treatment

Things to consider in scar treatment include regular doctor check-ups, being patient, protecting yourself from the sun and choosing the right product.

Wound healing in human skin takes 12-16 months. During this time, scars go through different stages. Initially (first 4-6 months), scars appear red and red but become darker over time. After the first year, the color begins to lighten. Scars that initially appear can become much better towards the end of this period (14-16 months). Therefore, it is important to be patient because scar treatment takes a long time, and the results become apparent over time.

Protecting yourself from the sun, especially during and after treatment, prevents scars from getting darker. Also, not using products other than those recommended by your doctor will prevent possible side effects and increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

It is Possible to Deal with Scars!

The formation of scars after plastic surgery is a natural process, but the prominence of these scars can be minimized with the right techniques and care methods. Treatment of existing scars is possible with various methods. Remember, regular care and patience play an important role in the success of aesthetic results.
